Amethyst...the color of royalty and well-being
The amethyst is extravagance in violet. Its color is unparalleled. The color purple is traditionally the color of royalty and amethyst
has been used since the dawn of history to adorn the rich and
powerful monarchs and rulers.
A large number of miraculous powers are
attributed to the amethyst in all sorts of cultures:
- The Greek words 'amethystos' mean 'not intoxicated'. Wine globets were often carved from Amethyst because it was a strong antidote against drunkenness.
- Protect crops against tempests and locusts, bring good fortune in war
and in the hunt, drive out evil spirits and inspire the intellect.
- Later, Hieronymus even reported that eagles
placed an amethyst in their nest in order to protect their young from
the selfsame danger.
- Gemstone therapists say
that the amethyst has a sobering and cleansing effect.
- Esteemed as a stone of friendship
- Symbolise trust and piety
Amethyst is produced in abundance in Brazil where it occurs in large geodes within volcanic rocks. The highest grade amethyst (called "Deep Russian") is exceptionally
rare and therefore its value is dependent on the demand of collectors
when one is found. Although it must always be purple to
be amethyst, it can and does have a wide range of purple shades.
